March 10 – Psalm 15 – On doing evil
“LORD, who shall abide in Thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in Thy holy hill?” Psalm 15v1
“He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour,…” Psalm 15v3
“…who does his neighbor no wrong …” Psalm 15v3 (New International Verse)
“…or harm their neighbors…” Psalm 15v3 (New Living Translation)
Evil has been around in the world for a long time. It was first mentioned in Genesis 2v9 in the King James Bible, in the form of the “tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: …” Genesis 3v22
And we may think, evil in what sense, it seems relegated to Satan and his cohorts. Yet with a question that Jesus asks in Luke 6v9, we see that it is very possible for us to do evil… sometimes without even knowing it.
“Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the Sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?”Luke 6v9
And we know too the verse Romans 13v9:
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
For this, Thou shalt no commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Romans 13v8-10
